18th-19th century, tempera, gesso and gilding on wood. The Russian icon with hand painted scenes from the prophet Elijah's life including the central scene of Elijah sitting in his cave, with additional scenes from Elijah's life such as being fed in the wilderness by an angel, two scenes of dividing the Jordan River by striking it with his mantle and his fiery ascension into heaven on a golden chariot toward God the Father in the upper left while passing his mantle to his successor, Elisha, with Cyrillic writing to the upper margin translating to "The Fiery Ascent of the Prophet Elijah" and above figures, with two original splints to the back. Approx. 13 by 10 5/8 in., 33 by 27 cm.
