A Chinese Porcelain Vase with White Enamel
19th/20th century, Qing dynasty. The large white jar decorated with white and iron red overglaze enamels to depict scenes from the folktale Bai She Zhuan or Legend of the White Snake Maiden. In one scene the Snake Maiden, Baisu Zhen, is being captured by the Monk Fahai before being imprisoned in a temple. The other scene is Baisu Zhen after being freed from the temple, reuniting with her husband and son. The scenes in square panels surrounded by floral meander, which also surrounds the four attributes of the scholar: chessboard, lute, book and scroll paintings. Cloud scroll around shoulder and lappets around base. Six character underglaze blue "Yi You Bao Ding Zhe Zhen" mark to base. Approx. 16 by 11 in., 41 by 28 cm.
