Guan Shanyue (1912-2000), Ink Plum Blossoms
1989. Ink on paper, hand scroll, un-mounted. Guan Shanyue was a famous Chinese painter from the second generation of the Lingnan School, and was also a member of the Renjian Painting Society. This painting depicts a traditional scholarly motif of an ?ink plum? or flowering plum branch painted without the use of color. As plum blossoms bloom in late winter they are symbolic of moral endurance. According to the inscription, this painting was created for Doctor Xian Wen in the winter of 1989, artist?s seal next to the inscription. Approx. 19 1/2 by 27 in., 49.5 by 68.5 cm.
