20th century. Ink on paper, hanging scroll. Niu Yongjian was a revolutionist from Shanghai who participated in the Xinhai Revolution of 1911, and also a famous calligrapher. According to the inscriptions on the left, this calligraphy was written as a gift to a high ranking Qing military official named Cheng Duquan (1860-1930), who became the Internal Affairs Secretary-General of the Nanjing Temporary Government in the first year of Republic of China (1912), during the autumn of Jichou Year. This calligraphy is a famous quote from the Confucian text Zhongyong or ?Doctrine of the mean? which addresses morality and leading a harmonious life. Approx. 14 1/2 by 34 1/2 in. 37 by 87.5 cm.
