18th/19th century. A soapstone carving of a scholar official wearing a voluminous robe incised with cloud motifs, holding a fan and seated on a rock platform with traces of paint to the eyes, mouth and shoes. Approx. 3 5/8 by 2 3/4 in., 9.2 by 7 cm.
