Ryukyu Kingdom Cinnabar Lacquer Stacking Boxes
18th century, Ryukyu Kingdom. Of rectangular form and three tiered sections with lid and handled carrier. The shu-urushi (cinnabar red) lacquer exterior decorated with the hakue (gilding) technique to depict a roundel with foliage and a butterfly on the lid within a rectangular key-fret and zigzag border with is repeated around the rims of each tier. The interior covered in black lacquer. The stand with gold zigzag and dot patterns along handle. Provenance: From an Oklahoma City Collection. Approx. 5 1/2 by 4 in., 14 by 10.3 cm.
