Keisai Eisen (1790-1848), Beauties with Umbrellas

Early 19th century, Edo Period. Ink and color on paper, a pair of hashira-e woodblock prints, framed. The print to the right by Keisai Eisen, depicts a courtesan in the rain under an umbrella, her kosode open to reveal her ankle and sandal. Eisen signature to lower right. The second print to the left, without signature, most likely also by Eisen, depicts a courtesan under a parasol and another below her with a cup of tea. Title inscription to upper right, publisher?s seal to middle right. Left print approx. 22 3/4 by 3 � in., 57.9 by 9 cm., right print approx. 22 � by 4 � in., 57.9 by 10.8 cm.
