A Ming Dynasty Gilt Bronze Statue of Yue Fei, Zhongwu
Ming dynasty (1368-1644). A gilt and blackened bronze statue of Song dynasty general Yue Fei (1103-1142), who fought against the Jurchen of the Jin dynasty, who was posthumously given the names Zhongwu in 1162 and Wumu in 1179 by Song Emperor Xiaozong, and the name E Wang by Song Emperor Ningzong in 1211. Here he sits elegantly on a chair with a serene face, elongated earlobes, a long pointed beard and long hair running down his back. The front of his robe is heavily adorned with a dragon in relief. His hands rest gently on his knees and his bare feet peek out from beneath his robe. His face, hands, and feet gilt. On a wooden stand. Approx. 11 3/4 by 8 in., 30 by 20.3 cm.
