Li Kuchan (1899-1983), Album of Bird and Flower Paintings
c. 1977. Ink and color on paper, album of eight birds and flower paintings. Li Kuchan was a famous 20th century painter who was a student of Qi Baishi, was especially skillful in the genre of bird and flower painting, and taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. This album includes paintings of roosters, partridges, ravens, an egret, shrimp, a vulture, mushrooms and cabbage with crabs, and herons. All with inscriptions and seals, mounted in silk borders on accordion bound pages within a cloth cover with title cartouche. Each painting approx. 11 1/2 by 15 1/4 in., 29 by 38.8 cm.
