A Japanese Silk, Chinese Style, Dragon Surcoat

Late 19th/20th century, Meiji period. An ivory colored silk robe embroidered with a five clawed, front-facing dragon above two smaller dragons in profile frolicking in a cloud filled sky, scattered with auspicious emblems including flaming pearls and bats above crashing waves and sea spray. The robe is unusual in its Chinese imagery and cut. Approx. 45 1/2 by 59 1/4 in., 115.6 by 150.5 cm.
