A Gilt Bronze Ritual Ding Vessel and Cover

Late Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC). The compressed globular body encircled by a single raised band and set at the rim with a pair of loop handles, the domed cover surmounted by three small ring handles, all supported on three cabriole legs. Gold inlaid ?teeming hook? bands around the rims and handles, and on the lid encircling a band of floral roundels and a central roundel featuring two phoenixes. The bronze of greyish-black tone with patches of malachite colored encrustation. A similar vessel is conserved in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Pillsbury Collection) and illustrated in Sherman E. Lee's 'A History of Far Eastern Art', New York, 1964, pg. 45. Provenance: From the Estate of Patrick H. Booth, Jr. Approx. 6 1/8 by 8 1/8 in., 15.5 by 20.5 cm.
