Xu Gu (1823-1896), Gourd on a Vine
19th century, Qing dynasty. Ink and color on paper, album leaf. Xu Gu was a famous monk painter during the Qing dynasty who was skilled at painting birds and fish. This album leaf depicts three gourds on a leafy vine, painted in the Chan or Zen style. Signed to the right with his painter?s name and studio name with his artist?s seal. From the collection of Ma Gongyu (1893-1969), a painter and calligrapher. Approx. 10 1/4 by 13 1/4 in., 26 by 33.8 cm.
