Xu Gu (1823-1896), Cabbage and Plum
19th century, Qing dynasty. Ink and color on paper, album leaf. Xu Gu was a famous monk painter during the Qing dynasty who was skilled at painting birds and fish. This album leaf depicts a flowering plum branch and a head of cabbage, painted in the Chan or Zen style. To the right is an inscription stating these items are annual ancestral sacrifices. From the collection of Ma Gongyu (1893-1969), a painter and calligrapher. Approx. 10 1/4 by 13 1/4 in., 26 by 33.8 cm.
